Hieroglyphics Translator

This hieroglyphics translator writes English letters as Egyptian hieroglyphs. Each letter is replaced with the uniliteral sign that stands for the same sound, such as the vulture for A, the foot for B and the owl for M. The result is real Unicode hieroglyphs, so you can copy and paste it into a message, a post or a document without installing a font. Choose Hieroglyphs to English to read pasted signs back as letters.

It spells English sounds with Egyptian signs rather than translating into the Ancient Egyptian language, which had its own words and grammar. The hieroglyph alphabet below lists the sign for every letter. For other symbol alphabets, try the Wingdings translator or the Morse code translator.

Can I write my name in hieroglyphics?

Yes. Type your name into the box and it is spelled out sign by sign. Cleopatra, for example, becomes π“Ž‘π“ƒπ“‡‹π“―π“Šͺ𓄿𓏏𓂋𓄿. Egyptian scribes wrote royal names inside an oval called a cartouche, so if you are drawing or engraving a name you can frame the signs the same way.

Is this a real translation into Ancient Egyptian?

No. The tool transliterates: it writes the sounds of English words with the Egyptian signs for those sounds. Ancient Egyptian was a separate language, and its writing mixed sound signs with signs for whole words and silent signs called determinatives that showed what a word meant. Turning an English sentence into correct Egyptian needs a dictionary and a knowledge of the grammar, not a letter swap.

Why do some letters share a hieroglyph?

Egyptian writing recorded consonants and left most vowels out, so the alphabet does not have a sign for every English letter. E and I share the reed (𓇋), C and K the basket (π“Ž‘), F and V the horned viper (𓆑), while W is the quail chick (π“…±) and U a variant of it (π“…²). X is written as K followed by S. When you read hieroglyphs back to English, a shared sign comes out as the letter Egyptologists use for it, so the reed reads as i and the basket as k. Some other online translators use a different set of signs (the quail chick for O, a buzzard for E, the hill for K), and the reader understands those too, so hieroglyphs copied from those sites usually come back as the words they spelled. Q reads back as K, since the two sets use the hill and the basket the other way round.

How do you write "I love you" in hieroglyphics?

Spelled letter by letter, "I love you" is 𓇋 𓃭𓍯𓆑𓇋 π“‡Œπ“―π“…². The Egyptians had their own word for love, mer, written with a hoe sign, but a letter-by-letter spelling is what most people use for a card, a tattoo or a message.

Which way do you read hieroglyphs?

Hieroglyphs could be written left to right, right to left or in columns. You read toward the faces: the people and animals look toward the start of the line. This tool writes left to right, the same direction as the English it comes from, and the signs face left, toward the start of the line, so they read the right way round.

Why do the hieroglyphs show as boxes?

The signs are Unicode characters from the Egyptian Hieroglyphs block, and a device needs a font that includes them to draw them. Current versions of Windows, macOS, iOS and Android all have one. On an older device, or an app that uses its own font, the same text can show as empty boxes, but the characters are still there and appear correctly when pasted somewhere that supports them.
