Number Sorter

The Number Sorter puts a list of numbers in ascending, descending or random order. Paste the numbers one per line, or on a single line separated by commas or spaces, and the sorted list appears on the right in the same format. It handles whole numbers, decimals, negative numbers, thousands separators such as 1,250, and numbers followed by a unit such as 12px or 3 kg.

Settings can remove duplicate numbers and change the separator in the result, for example to turn a column of numbers into a comma-separated list. Under the result the tool shows the count, sum, mean, median, minimum, maximum and range of the numbers.

How do I sort numbers in numerical order?

Paste your list into the input box and pick Ascending (smallest to largest) or Descending (largest to smallest) under Order. The sorted list appears straight away, ready to copy. Numbers are compared by value, so 10 comes after 9 rather than after 1 as it would in an alphabetical sort. Lines that are not numbers are kept and placed at the end, in their original order.

How do I remove duplicate numbers?

Turn on Remove duplicates. Each number is kept once, and numbers with the same value count as duplicates even when written differently, so 5, 5.0 and 5.00 become a single 5 (the first one in your list is kept). A number with a unit, such as 12px, only matches the same text.

Can I shuffle a list of numbers into random order?

Yes. Choose Random under Order and the numbers are shuffled using your browser's cryptographic random number generator, so every order is equally likely. Each change to the list shuffles it again. To create new numbers rather than shuffle your own, use the random number generator.

How are the sum, mean and median worked out?

The sum adds every number, the mean is the sum divided by the count, and the median is the middle number once the list is sorted, or the average of the two middle numbers when the count is even. The range is the maximum minus the minimum. Lines that are not numbers are left out, and when every number has the same unit the results are given in that unit. The figures are shown under the result rather than in it, so copying the sorted list never includes them.

Can I sort words or names instead of numbers?

Use the alphabetical sorter for text. It sorts numbers inside words naturally, so item2 comes before item10.
